YUW: Life Choices and Livelihoods Programme for ActionAid

The Young Urban Women: Life Choices and Livelihood programme (YUW) began in 2013 across Ghana, India and South Africa and extended to Kenya in 2017. The programme works towards supporting the agency of young women living in poverty in urban informal settlements. It recognises and addresses the interlinkages between economic security, bodily integrity including SRHR and the burden of unpaid care and domestic work in the lives of young women.

I worked with Action Aid to illustrate and design an updated brochure including YUW’s approach, framework and impact, while visually highlighting the voices of young people from the programme. Using Action Aid’s brand colours as a guide, I created illustrations that reflect the vision for the programme, while also centering the experiences that young people shared. Using diverse bodies entwined with the environment and symbols of resistance, the illustrations capture the ways young women are self organising and building solidarity in their communities.
