Biodiversity is a Priority

Now, more than ever before, it is our responsibility to restore the systems that sustain the Earth we live, breathe and exist in. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that 75% of Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems and 66% of marine environments have been significantly altered by human actions. There is a pressing need for action in the face of rapid biodiversity loss. I worked with The International Analog Forestry Network (IAFN), to illustrate a few case studies of a solution to protect our critical ecosystems, one that’s grounded in gender and social justice, and based in principles of equity and care for people and the planet.

I used photographs, videos and case studies of the sites across Nepal, Uganda and Peru to create three comics exploring the transformational possibilities of community-led landscape restoration applying analog forestry. Central to the theme of the stories is the important relationship between people and land, and the power of nurturing it. It was crucial to also highlight the centering of care and community in women’s leadership, the strength of ancestral knowledge, and the ways in which food and economic sovereignty should be a huge part of the futures we imagine together.
